With a villa in Almeria or an apartment in Alemria you can combine the sun-drenched beaches of Southern Spain with a relaxed atmosphere that is sometimes missing from the main ‘costas’. The coastline stretches out on either side of the city of Almeria, with long beaches of sand and shingle lapped by the warm waters of the Mediterranean. The hills are sprinkled with picturesque villages such as Sorbas, Uleila del Campo, Lubrin, Bedar and Vera.
The year round clear skies make the area a favourite research centre for Astronomers and on the outskirts of the small town of Gergal, in the Sierra de los Filabres, there is the Hispano-German Astronomical centre, where you’ll find the worlds most powerful telescope.
Away from the beaches, the landscape might look strangely familiar – it has been used regularly as a setting for spaghetti-Westerns. ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ were both filmed here! It’s worth taking time to explore Spain’s Texas Hollywood and visit some of the film sets that have been built in the dramatic, desert-like scenery. Take your cowboy hat and a camera!
Further around the coast you’ll come across the natural parklands of Cabo de Gata, home to a large colony of flamingos.
White Marble is mined in the area of Macael (sierra de los Filabres) and it’s recognised quality means that it can be exported to many parts of the world!
In Almanzora you can visit caves, where you can see the formations formed by centuries of dripping water! Also, in ‘Los Milares’ there is a large archaeological site dating back to 1800BC that is believed to be Spain’s first metal works, and a crucial stepping-stone between the Stone and Bronze Ages.
Siroco Estates can be your sole real estate agent for buying villas and apartments in Almeria. Read on and start searching for your dream property in Almeria.
Almerimar is located in some of Spain’s finest scenery and is flanked on both sides by natural parks and beautiful, unspoilt beaches. It has some excellent facilities; at its heart is a 1,000 berth marina where you will find multi-million dollar yachts and expensive power boats from all over Europe bobbing alongside a large variety of delightful cafes, restaurants and chic boutiques. With over 13km of beach and excellent snorkelling and scuba diving opportunities in the crystal clear water, as well as a Championship golf course, everything seems possible, even skiing on the nearby slopes of the Sierra Nevada.
Roquetas is found tucked between the sea and mountains of Sierra De Gador. The resorts offer a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants. For more modern, purpose built facilities there is a compact centre that stretches into a long promenade – the perfect setting for your evening stroll before dinner.
Almeria the city, retains its Moorish heritage and takes its name from a word meaning ‘mirror of the sea’. It has plenty of intriguing hidden corners in its upper areas and narrow streets surrounding its famous Alcazaba, the largest Moorish palace ever built in Spain. The golden beaches in Almeria have been awarded more EU Blue Flags than in any other part of Spain! It is also the place to do your shopping if you want to buy some more typical souvenirs to take home (especially hand-painted ceramics).
Mojacar is known as ‘The Village of Enchantment’ in Spain and comes from the Arab name ‘Muxacra’, which comes from the Roman name ‘Mons Sacra’ – ‘Sacred Mountain’ and is situated at the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera Mountains. The romantic old town of Mojacar offers 17km of unspoilt beaches and retains its original character and Arabic appearance, with its winding, narrow cobbled streets and courtyards lined by whitewashed sugar-cube houses. Houses here are restricted to two floors and Hotels are restricted to four floors, so you won’t find the beach or the sea hidden from view!
Garrucha is another traditional Spanish fishing town found between the popular beaches of Mojacar and Vera playa. Numerous restaurants, specializing in locally caught fish, have sprung up along the Paseo Maritimo in Garrucha offering the catch of the day! This location offers a respite from the local tourist attractions, with its wide sandy beach, offering a perfect place to sunbathe, play sports or just relax and enjoy the view. The natural charm and appeal of Garrucha will surely entice you to return.
For those who appreciate ‘Unspoilt Spain’ then Costa de Almeria is for you. Property prices are relatively inexpensive, when compared to the Costa del Sol and Blanca regions. In the last 18 months the demand for property here has steadily increased, as people are moving their interest from the Sol and up the coast towards Almeria. For those who want ‘their place in the Sun’ without spending a fortune, they can do it here whilst prices are so competitive. Buyers here know, it is only a matter of time before prices begin to rise and their investments grow.
The demand for Almeria is showing; as Almeria Airport is currently being expanded and there are a number of flight companies increasing their flights to the region. Discover it before everyone else does… you’ll be surprised at it’s history, it’s beauty and could really fall in love with this part of Spain!
