Description
The medina of Asilah, encircled by 15th.century Portuguese walls is entered by five gates which pierce the walls.
There is the "sea-gate" which, as its name suggests, gives access to the beach and small fishing port.
The main medina gate which is the largest and is placed centrally to the medina. The "Mosque Gate" which is arrived at from Rue Ibn Batoutta and accessed via charming arches and leads alongside the central medina mosque, "Bab Homar" which brings you onto the popular commercial shopping street of Asilah. A further entrance is found at the Krakia , which leads directly from the beach into the medina. The medina itself is approximately 500mtrs by 600 so is very tiny!!
A most curious fact about Asilah is that there is only one set of traffic lights in the town, and it is on the way out of town on the road to Tangiers!
The main mode of transport is bicycle so the town is pollution free. There is no industry and the ozone is wonderful. The Krakia beach in Asilah is rocky with large stretches of sand. Washed clean by the Atlantic tide it is a glorious place to explore for natural life. There are rock pools left where you can find octopus and other sea creatures.
Asilah is 45 kms from Tangier, on the Atlantic coast, connected by a new motorway.
It is a tranquil and charming seaside resort with a long history. The Medina is surrounded by the 15th centuary Portuguese city walls.
In August Asilah hosts an international cultural festival. So there are excellent renting possibilties for home owners. Many artists are attracted to Asilah and the medina has two flourishing art galleries. One of these is housed in the The Cultural Centre which was opened by the previous monarch His Royal Highness Hassan the Second.
Asilah historic fortress medina is built directly on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.Asilah has three beaches all within a few minutes from the medina.
The "Krakia" just outside the walls is 4kms.in length. It is unspoilt and has no development.
The beach within the medina is in a sheltered cove and is backed by the ancient walls.
There is a magnificent stretch of true Atlantic virgin beach a few minutes from the main medina gate.
This beach extends many kilometres to the north and is fantastic for walking or bathing. Just outside of Asilah, a short ride by taxi or horse-drawn chariot is the wonderful Rmilet(sands)beach which leads along to Sidi Mrait beach. Both of these stretches of the Atlantic are enormous and breathtakingly beautiful.
Apart from the 15th.century walls which encircle Asilah there are also several historical sights of interest in Asilah and its environs.
Just outside the town of Asilah direction El Had you can find the ruins of a Phoenician settlement.
This is walking distance of 10minutes from the medina and is sited just above the Khaima hotel.A few kilometers from Asilah, a short taxi ride are the only "standing stone circle in existence outside of Europe.
CROMLECH M'SOUR is along a small track and is well worth a visit. To the North 20kms.outside Asilah are the ancient CAVES OF HERCULES there is also "evidence" of his footprint ,in a rock just along the road from Cap Spartel.
The caves were used for centuries as suppliers of millstones and successive removals can be seen incised in the chambers of the caves.
The Romans also used this area for a storage of Garum paste, the storage chambers are still able to be seen and are situated just behind the "Mirage" hotel and restaurant.
Then, 20kms to the South are the Roman ruins of LIXUS(from where Larache derives its name)
Sited on a small hill on the entrance to Larache you can see remains of an Amphitheatre houses and mosaics
